Affaire in the Gardens

Last weekend my family and I visited the Affaire in the Gardens Art Show in Beverly Hills, which is held twice a year (spring and fall). The free show features art by more than 250 exhibitors from around the country and is one of the most popular art events on the West Coast. This family-friendly festival also features live jazz, food trucks, craft making for kids, art tours and a wine garden. It's located along Santa Monica Boulevard from Rodeo Drive to Rexford Drive. The next show will be held in the fall on October 15th and 16th.

Marketwatch Mondays: Beverly Hills

Beverly Hills is one of the most desirable residential areas of Los Angeles. It is one of the most affluent cities in the world and is home to Hollywood celebrities, many corporate executives and numerous other wealthy individuals and families. Within its 5.7 square mile radius, it has approximately 34,000 residents with a business and commercial base that ranks next to cities with a population of several hundred thousand.

The City of Beverly Hills has its own school district with a reputation for some of the best schools in the nation. Most residents live in the Beverly Hills Flats -- an area that includes all of Beverly Hills south of Sunset Boulevard. Property prices can vary greatly by neighborhood. For example, compare these three five-bedroom homes currently on the market: $2,295,000 (south of Wilshire), $7,380,000 (south of Sunset) and $42,000,000 (north of Sunset).

Beauty Culture Exhibit Opening at Annenberg

"Beauty Culture," the first fashion- and beauty-themed exhibition to be held at The Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles, opens this Saturday, May 21 and runs through November 27. Featuring works from over 100 world-renowned beauty, fashion and fine art photographers, "BEAUTY CULTURE encourages a social discussion about the allure and mystique of the pursuit of female beauty, as well as its cult-like glorification and the multi-billion dollar industries that surround it."

The Annenberg is located in Century City at 2000 Avenue of the Stars, Los Angeles, CA 90067. The Space is open Wed-Sun from 11am to 6pm, but will be open for the Memorial Day holiday on Monday, May 30.

Scene at the Farmers Market

One of the best kept secrets in West Hollywood is the Melrose Place Farmers Market located on Melrose Place between Melrose and Croft. It runs every Sunday from 10am to 2pm. (Warning: This afternoon one vendor told me that he arrives around 6:30am and customers start lining up at 7!)

Located down the block from Marc Jacobs and Alexander McQueen, it's a sweet little market with a great variety of fresh produce, flowers, ethnic foods and jewelry.  While you may not want to make this a destination, the market is definitely a favorite among locals.

Spaulding Square Sophisticate

It may not be the sexiest property, but I am in love with this handsome and hip Spanish Revival bungalow in Spaulding Square. The 2 bedroom and 1.75 bath home just came on the market a couple of days ago and is being offered at $899,000. Renovated and updated by architect owner in 2005, this is a totally done house.
The classic early 1920's bungalow boasts a wonderful floor plan -- bright open living and dining rooms with French doors lead to a sheltered dining patio.
The private leafy grass yard reminds me of where I used to live back in New England.

The Beverly Hills Post Office area (often referred to as BHPO) is the northern part of Beverly Hills in the 90210 zip code, located in the hills above Sunset Boulevard. The Post Office area is primarily residential, mostly single family homes, and includes some of L.A.'s most popular gated communities. There's a fantastic range of mid-century and contemporary homes, many with incredible views of L.A., and also a wide range of more traditional family homes. The area also offers more privacy and seclusion than other neighborhoods.
